FAQS

  • Do I have to be trained to be a coach?

While formal training isn't always necessary, it can definitely be helpful. What training does, and is quite useful for, is to hone your natural skills and abilities into a business practice. Training allows you to further develop your gift into a more structured process so you can deliver it as a service product. Training is also great in expanding the types of questions you might ask. The more knowledge you possess in the area you are coaching in, the more thought-provoking questions you can ask the client. The great thing is that this training can be received in a number of different ways from the traditional to the not-so-traditional.

  • I am already a CSW/LSW/other helping professional? Do I need training?

Coaches have to be very careful that they don't cross certain ethical boundaries within the scope of their professional relationships. Coaching is not therapy.  Coaches with a mental health background need to be clear as to what coaching is and isn't so that the coach can maintain integrity of the coaching process. Training can definitely assist in this often difficult transition from therapeutic professions.

  • What does coach training consist of?

Typical trainings include an introduction to coaching and its definition, practical uses for coaching, exercises in self-awareness and personal development, focus on active listening and interviewing techniques, exploration of emotional intelligence topics and popular models such as NLP and Myers-Briggs assessment usage, a walk through a typical structured coaching model and lots and lots of hands-on, real life coaching.

  • How much does coach training cost?

This is dependent on what type of training you intend to pursue.  Most coaching courses leading to certification are priced from $2500 to $6000 depending on the length and focus of the program.  Many short-term programs exist for considerably less; however, there is not as much hands-on practice in these programs and many do not lead to a certification although these are usually sufficient enough to begin personal coaching.  There are also many great books and inexpensive workshops geared toward training coaches.

  • How do I choose a training program?

If your intention is to become certified then you should check with the IAC or ICF websites for accredited institutions that have been approved to teach their Masteries/Principles.  Otherwise, you should determine what your needs are and focus on an option that meets your specific budget.

  • What is a mentor coach?

A mentor coach is an experienced coach who offers his/her experience and training to new or less experienced coaches to aid them in transitioning into the coaching profession as well as to assist them in their own self-awareness.

  • I am already a coach. Do I need a mentor?

Even the most experienced coaches maintain a mentor or two in their circle of influence.  Coaches should be advocates of life-long learning.  Your are never so good of a coach that you can't benefit from the positive support of a mentor. It is highly recommended that coaches at every level maintain a working relationship with a mentor coach.

  • What is coaching certification?

Certification is a credential administered by a highly recognized and respected organizational body with the purpose of maintaining a high professional standard within the coaching industry.  Certifying bodies typically require a rigorous application process and mandatory adoption of a defined code of ethics.

  • Do I have to be certified before I can coach?

While you do not have to be certified to coach, certification can be helpful in getting your foot in the door.  This is especially true in the case of executive and business coaches whose clients may expect this credential.
